Council Supports Cowra Pistol Club with $1,500 Donation Towards Range Upgrades

Cowra Shire Council has approved a $1,500 donation to the Cowra Pistol Club, contributing to the cost of a recently issued Construction Certificate for major upgrades to the club’s shooting range. The works, which have an estimated total cost of $38,000 aim to significantly improve the club’s facilities, expand competition capacity, and enhance accessibility for athletes with disabilities.

Mayor Paul Smith welcomed the decision, stating, “Council is proud to support the Cowra Pistol Club as they continue to improve their facilities and create a more inclusive environment for all participants. Investments like these not only strengthen our local sporting community but also boost regional tourism and economic activity. We commend the club for their vision and commitment to accessibility.”

The funding follows a formal request from Mr Graham Apthorpe, Secretary of the Cowra Pistol Club, who sought assistance to cover 50% of the $3,418.71 certification cost. Although Council’s Donations Policy generally does not cover retrospective expenses, it recognised that the project is ongoing and strongly aligned with Council’s commitment to inclusivity and community development.

“We are extremely grateful to Cowra Council for their support,” Mr Apthorpe said. “This generous contribution will go directly towards the compliance and certification costs needed to proceed with our range upgrade. Once completed, the new facilities will enable us to host higher-level competitions and open our doors more widely to shooters with disabilities.”

Council noted that the planned improvements are expected to position the Cowra Pistol Club as a potential host for regional and state-level events, drawing visitors to the area and contributing to the local economy. The club continues to seek further financial support to complete the full scope of works.

In the same meeting, Council also resolved to provide $1,791 to assist the Woodstock Soldiers Memorial Hall with its Centenary celebrations on 24 May 2025, highlighting Council’s broader support for community-led initiatives that celebrate local heritage and strengthen social connections.
